DEFINITION
Violent overstretching of one or more ligaments in the foot.
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
Severe pain at the time of injury. YES
A feeling of popping or tearing inside the foot. TEARING
Tenderness at the injury site. HECK YES
Swelling in the foot. YES
Bruising that appears soon after injury. YES
RISK INCREASES WITH
Runners, walkers and those who jump in such sports as basketball, soccer, volleyball, skiing, distance jumping, high jumping, windsurfers who do not widen their footstraps to accomodate thicker winter booties and then go for sweet air.
POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS
Prolonged healing time if usual activities are resumed too soon. DAMN!
AVERAGE HEALING TIME
Mild sprains–2 to 6 weeks.
Moderate sprains–6 to 8 weeks.
Boo hiss! A windsurfing injury was not on my to do list.
