Jonathan declared that ice surfing season was over, and so a local crew went out to meet the honking SE winds.
With the local sensor read 40 gusting to 55, (though we didn’t get that much on the water) the launch chosen was new to most of us (Atterbury on Shinnecock Bay), and a new spot for the Puffin’s windsurfing map. Air temp was 49, water 42…positively balmy compared to recent coldwater adventures.
The gusts and “up down-ness” were considerable…whether that’s how Atterbury sails or not isn’t clear, though a frustrated Scott was heard saying “this ain’t the place.” The changing conditions had several of us rigging down. For myself starting with a 4.7, rigging a 4.0 had me first break a downhaul (hasn’t happened to me in years as I am a little nuts about replacing worn lines) and then broke a mast (hasn’t happpend to me EVER…a practically brand new mast that I believe will be covered by warranty.) The mast broke while I downhauled a sail, so I still haven’t REALLY broken a mast…which leaves me feeling somewhat unmanly.
More time wave sailing is prescribed.
