The Peconic Puffin

A blog about a group of windsurfers and other water sports enthusiasts, and their friends. Established 1993.

(UPDATE TUESDAY, 3PM: Hecksher has reportedly reopened the beach. The original report is below.)

If you were checking out the wind observations for the Great South Bay yesterday and wishing you were at Heckscher (gusts in the mid 30’s), you’re not the only one who missed it there. The park closed the beach due to high bacteria levels, and as of this morning it remains closed. “The Sewer” indeed!

The park doesn’t have any information on its website at this time. To call for updates, the number is (631) 581-2100.

So go sail somewhere else! Want to try a new spot? Check out this map of Long Island windsurfing sites. Feel free to add a spot of you notice a good one missing.
