Subject: Total Skunkage

You missed nothing.

Before I made it out east a few guys went to Cupsogue. The wind was
strong early but with many holes, and there was a lot of current
and a bad rip tide. The Wolf broke a mast and tore some other gear,
according to Jon Ford, who watched and then chose not to launch. Bruce and Fisherman also sailed…don’t know how they did.

WaitingJon called me as I was turning on to Dune Road and said “about
face…we go to South Jamesport.” Went there, it was fogged in. So
we drove to New Suffolk, where the fog was clearing but the wind
appeared light. I went out as wind dummy on a 5.5. I couldn’t have
planed on an 8.5 as it turned out. We stuck around for an hour
(waiting for the sun to come out…the sun came out but nothing
happened.) I drove from North Sea to Westhampton to Mattituck and
back and got no sailing in (except for the channel crossing at New
Suffolk.)

Looking at the Yahoo boards they got some wind mid-Island. I am envious.

    You are obviously in the same situation we are in right now…………..only difference a few degrees warmer this end!

    I think we may get our revenge on the skunks tomorrow (and I’m willing to drive up Island for it), but Monday we may see a major Nor’easter shaping up. Watch for the NWS to bump up wind speeds….

    Bummer on that! It was cranking up at Cape Cod. My pal Sergey and I went to Kalmus and sailed from 9:30AM to 12:30. We were both overpowered on 4.7s as the wind picked up from the mid-20s to 30+ and gusts to 40. With the fog, we could only see about 100 feet for the first hour. It was just the two of us all morning.

    100 feet! I’ve sailed in fog like that…it can get dicey if you and a buddy find yourself coming at each other. We had quite a bit of fog…I heard that some guys who were sailing the ocean at Cupsogue came in when they couldn’t easily find the shore.
    Jeff and I got into a bit of a jam in some fog last summer. I’m becoming increasingly wary of the hazards of low visibility!

    I have been reading in Tillerman’s blog that he is in Cabarete. It is a brilliant place to go for a holiday. We were there for 3 weeks a few years ago and in all that time we only had about 2 days we couldnt sail. It’s probably not too expensive for you guys to go down there – quite a long haul for us with a 3 hour flight, overnight then a 10 hour flight! If I lived in the States I would try and make it a yearly or every other year treat if financially possible. The reef is about a third of a mile offshore and the waves are great. You can really choose where you want to be with the ‘lagoon’ for very safe sailing and out onto the reef for some wave action. Good for all levels. You should try to get a group together – summer has the most reliable wind.
