Coolmaps
If you enjoy maps, check out this web site, which creates overlays of navigational maps with Google Earth.  Grab the sliders to adjust how much map versus Earth you see, and to fade the labels in and out.   The map here looks at the waters (the North Race) between New Suffolk and Robins Island…site of mad jibefests and the near demise of Peconic Jeff and your editor.

    Yeah, that was quite an experience. I’ve sailed New Suffolk a half dozen times since then…I can tell you that in broad daylight you still have to focus on boat traffic crossing the channel. The only story I’ve ever heard of a windsurfer being killed on Long Island water took place at New Suffolk (happened many many years ago…apparently a down sailor was hit by a boat blasting through the channel.)
