“I’m getting worked,” Frank said as he brought his gear up the beach at Ponquogue. But I was only half paying attention as I’d arrived late and wanted to get out on the water ASAP. I’ve been pining for a wave since last week’s fun in Hatteras, and there they were, right in front of me.
An hour later we were comparing “getting worked” notes. Side-off at Ponquogue (northeast) was fine on the outside, but inside the unpredictable wind holes were making the barrage of white water and late-breaking swell on the inside tough. The signature problem Frank and I were having was being shot forward by a gust just fast enough to get air off of the inside waves, but without enough power or time to get into the footstraps. Follow with a little separation at the apex, fall in the impact zone, wash…rinse…repeat.
That was fun.
But for the most part the outside was reachable, and there were some nice sized waves (and clean wind) to be had. There my 5.5 and 93 liters were just about perfect. I didn’t have much luck with the waves, though I saw the Wolf shoot down a beautiful six-footer, and Jon Ford had usual share of good rides. Bruce and Scott were also in on the action, which ended promptly a few hours after it started when the wind died. At which time by pure coincidence I had just fallen in the impact zone.
Wash, rinse, repeat.
