Rocktober Racing Results

Rocktoberracing

It was practically November, but Rocktober Racing got raced!  It happened Sunday at West Neck, site of the Fall Race in 2009.   I missed the entire thing, wheezing at home with a wicked cold, arm in a sling with a dinged tendon, I got to read the email about it and piece together this post.  First the results (all editorialization is Pete's):

Jeanne came in first for the lady's.

There's a story out there that Florian was "taken out" by a motorboat, hence the need for glasses mentioned by Pete.  Scoring was handled by Devon Roesch, Scott Yanuck and Marianne Rantala if I have it right (what are the odds of that?)

Congratulations to all racers on a fine event, and big props to Pete!

    Well he almost took me out at the jibe mark and he said he didn’t see me or the boat, hence the glasses

    Another great fall races. I never thought much about racing until I entered the fall races 2 years ago and ever since, I’ve always got the itch for another day of high wind racing. While the group wasn’t large because of the cold, it was still a great group and lots of fun.
    There is nothing like rigging my old 6.7 when I could be planing on a 5.0 and trying to hold it down as we all charge toward the jibe mark. Every racer had their great moments and frustrations and that’s what made the day so great. For me one great highlight was getting a great start in the 1st heat, leading to the jibe mark and on the final leg hearing Florian charging and closing the gap on me on his 8.3m sail and 130liter slalom board as I pushed as hard as I could. And the frustrations included the second race feeling and seeing a large weed dragging off the back of my board as I debated whether to fight it, or stop to remove it as everyone was going flying by me. And of course the last race where, exhausted, I got flattened three times fighting the front hand as I probably could have been on a 4.5.
    What’s great is you don’t need to be a racer and you don’t need to have race gear. Four guys had race boards and sails 8.0m+ and the rest of us sailed 7.0 on down with all around boards. I pulled out my year 2000 pro-tech bump and jump board and my year 2001 6.7 for the day’s fun. I don’t think you’ll find a person who’s participated in the fall races and not had a blast. Let’s just hope a windy NW day comes a little sooner next year so it’s not so cold.
