Seven Five Duck Jibe

I had not windsurfed since late May.   It takes special circumstances or desperation to get me to rig my 7.5 (’cause I can plane almost as early on my 6.2) but this last Sunday I just HAD to sail!  So rig it I did, and had me a fine time sailing from Towd Point Beach on the Little Peconic.

A friend named Steve who lives in Bonaire does donkey jibes with his 7.5.   I can’t, but I can plane through a duck jibe on one, so that’s what I was doing in the barely planing conditions (that I am grateful for!)

    Nice duck jibe! I’d be happy to do one like that on a 5.5, let alone on a 7.5 What model of sail are you on, and what type and size of board/fin? How windy is it?

    James it’s a Naish Switch. I’m on a JP Freestyle 109 from 2005 (a duck jibing machine…the freestyle boards of that era loved to carve compared to the current models. The fin is an 11″ Maui Fin Company. Wind was 12-15. Duck jibing is easy…it’s all about keeping your body still and starting the duck handwork very very early. On a 4.7 for example, the entire sail flip and catch is completed before the board passes through 6 o’clock. Notice how my head doesnt move or turn during the jibe (the camera stays steady that’s how you know). It’s all about staying still and smooth.
